Exchange Exchange, OSS Groupware revisited
Ever thought you can pick up a brochure of and Open Source Groupware provider and say: “Ok there we’ll migrate tomorrow?”
I hate how marketing teams Steal, Kill and Destroy the Dreams of SysAdmins, with, as Wikipedia terms it Peacock Terms.
Anyway, I have seen lots of amazing Groupware systems outhere.
Today, I, Mr Grumpy will share some thoughts on Kolab. Even though this is not the Groupware Suite I’m “Grumpy” with. (I might share this later this week)
So Kolab, is a breath of fresh air in this Barren, Dry Desert of Deception and Bright Banner ads of Cruelty, in other words the Groupware space.
Why, you might ask ? The answer, simple, it costs nothing, not a penny, not a nickel.
You get what you pay for ? Yes, like the Apache Webserver.
The Server is Solid and Proven.
Kolab can be run on most Unix like Operating Systems.
The Client Side, sucks a bit, like a Hoover with a bad attitude
and a Harley Davidson with a Broom stick for handle bars.
I’m not a huge fan of KDE (Porting the Windows Expierince to Unix™, is never a good idea)
The Client you would want to use is Kontact, yes it’s spelled wrong
and when you click “Help”, “About” you get Roseanne Barr, with a Jodie Foster mask. It’s Very Deceptive,
but it works.
Is it a bird ? is it a plane ?
It’s a bird, Thunderbird, is very nice multi platform Email Client,
and the Cool thing about it, is that it’s about as extendible as Michael Jackson’s Nose.
If you add “Lighting” a Calendar Plugin, You get a very light and nimble Email Client, Sufficient for most users.
Adding the “SyncKolab” Plugin, Guess what ? You get a multi platform, email client that does not suck as much
as our Roseanne Barr impersonating email client.
That is also an Awesome Email Client for working with your already Rock Solid Industry Proven Email Groupware Collaboration Server™
So what I’m saying is try SyncKolab+Thunderbird with Kolab.
SyncKolab is at Version 1.1
